Hitler got started early in trying to weed out dissenting voices. In 1933, six whole years before invading Poland, the Nazi party arranged a series of book burnings at universities all across Germany. Students and professors alike made bonfires of books that were considered “anti-German.”

Some of the books that ended up in these fires were by English language authors like Jack London and H. G. Wells. Others were by Jewish writers like Sigmund Freud and Albert Einstein. Some of them were popular novels. Others were serious scholarly works and textbooks.
